Historic Downtown Tours

Walk this way.

The rich history of Monroe and West Monroe has been largely preserved in the downtown areas. Both sides of the river offer self-guided walking tours.

West Side History

In West Monroe, the tour takes place in Antique Alley on Trenton Street. What once was a bustling city port now serves as a quaint shopping location. Walk up the steps in the Rialto antique store and imagine it’s time as a movie theatre. Admire the Hamilton House Inn’s Romanesque Revival style architecture, and picture it as a three-story hotel and restaurant when it was the Webb Hotel. See the big Coca-Cola Mural featuring Sprite Boy.

On the Monroe side, the tour stretches a bit further, so bring a car with you if you plan on hitting all locations. This tour features the Cooley House, one of the last surviving examples of Prairie School architecture in the South. See Layton Castle, inspired by European architecture, this house features a red tile roof, two-story high arches, and a stunning round tower at the corner of the building. Find all of the murals throughout downtown Monroe, including the newest postcard mural.
