Arts and Activism
The Arts & Activism Performance Prep Workshop is a free youth development program presented by the Choices Mentoring for Families and Youth through its Arts & Activism initiative. The workshop will take place every Monday from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM at Ollie Burns Branch Library and is open to youth ages 13–18. The program creates a safe, engaging, and inspiring environment where young artists can build confidence, strengthen communication skills, and use creative expression as a positive outlet for personal and community impact.
Participants will receive hands-on instruction from local artists, musicians, performers, educators, and media professionals in areas such as stage presence, songwriting, lyric composition, vocal delivery, microphone technique, crowd engagement, breath control, and live performance preparation. Students will also explore how art, storytelling, and performance have historically been used to inspire social awareness, encourage leadership, and strengthen communities.
In addition to performance training, the workshop emphasizes teamwork, professionalism, self-expression, and public speaking skills. Youth participants will collaborate with peers to create original material and prepare for live performances in a supportive and uplifting atmosphere. The goal is to help students grow both artistically and personally while connecting them with mentors and positive creative opportunities within the community.
The program will conclude with a free community showcase performance on July 30, where participants will present original work and live performances for family members, community supporters, and local residents. The Arts & Activism Performance Prep Workshop is part of a broader effort to expand access to arts education and youth leadership opportunities throughout the Monroe and West Monroe area through creativity, culture, and community engagement.
